ABC Reopening
November 1, 2008

November 1 was an historic day for ABC University Liberia as we celebrated the reopening of the institution after 14 years of war. The campus, nestled at the base of the Nimba Mountains, makes a conducive environment for study and reflection. It' an ideal setting as a future learning center for higher Christian education in the West African region.

Highlighting the occasion the Samaritan' Purse helicopter, carrying the Country Director and his entourage, swooped down and parked in the middle of the campus. The vision of restoring ABCU could not have been realized without the assistance of Samaritans Purse! They made ABCU their #1 project in the country sending work teams from the states, containers full of supplies and Dave Petersen, Construction Manager.

ABC Reopening

Welcome to ABC University where truth is taught for transformation. Using a rigorous admissions process Becky and I, along with ABC graduates, combed the country to find top caliber leaders who now form the first cohort of students.

THE MATRICULATION CEREMONY

ABC Reopening

A significant stage in the lives of the new ABC University students is the transition into university. All rites of passage events in African cultures involve symbolic transactions. Pastor Jonah, representing the Christian elders of the community, presented to Dr. Del Chinchen (President of ABCU) a white chicken with the statement: "These are our children. We give them to you to train them to become Christian leaders of integrity. We will support you in this training process."

Del responded with the promise that he and his faculty will teach and model God' truth preparing the students to become the Christian leaders for which Africa is yearning.
The 28 matriculands voiced together the Matriculation Covenant: "We, the students of ABC University, commit ourselves to the learning of God' Truth and His work of transformation in us through the power of the cross of Jesus Christ."

ABC ReopeningThe signing of the Matriculation Book, before a crowd of 350 people, officially advanced them from matriculands to students of ABC University.

THE PROGRAM

The Founders, Jack and Nell Chinchen (in foreground), attended this special event along with Paul Chinchen (in red robe), President of ABC International. Del and Dr. Slawon are also pictured.

Dr. Slawon, Director of the Commission of Higher Education, presented an official certificate giving the institution permanent University status. To receive the document with Del was Rev. Dr. Jack Chinchen (Founder), Rev. Kokeh Kotee (ABC Alumni representative), Prof. Nathan Mulbah (Faculty) and Carney Johnson (Local Board Member).

Tours of the campus were given to all those in attendance. "Europe has come to Liberia!" was the comment of some. Dr. Slawon stated: "We are going to send up to ABC University those who want to open universities and colleges in Liberia for them to see how it should be done."

ABC Reopening

God has made ABC University better than new! Now His work of transformation in students begins in earnest.

Thank you for your part in this miracle,

Del & Becky
