African Bible College

ABC Scholarship Letter

Dear Friends and Family,

In the spring of 2003, I remember stepping out on our front porch and looking across the beautiful campus of African Bible College in Malawi. It was a perfect Saturday morning. The rainy season was just ending, so the entire grounds were tropical green. Next door was Dr. Palmer Robertson, camera in hand, snapping photos. My first thought was, “Wow, great morning to take pictures of the campus!” Then I looked in the direction where Palmer’s camera was pointed, and there was a sight that really was worth taking a picture of—hundreds of prospective students lined up to register for the entrance exam my wife, Laura, was administering that morning.

The line was two-people wide, and wound from the chapel across the parking lot, down the road, and out the front gate. I was blown away —so many eager young people anxious for an opportunity to enroll in a Christian college—anxious for a Christian education that will equip them to share Christ with their own people.

That day Laura and her Admissions Department gave our entrance exam to over 300 prospective students. A few weeks later, similar scenes were repeated in Malawi’s two other large cities, Blantyre and Mzuzu.

Exciting things are happening at African Bible College, both in Malawi and at our new university in Uganda. On September 1st, ABC Uganda opened its doors to the first class of 19 freshmen. Dr. Robertson, the Director of the college in Uganda, has been joined by missionary staff from the U.S., England, and Scotland, as well as Ugandan ABC graduates who have returned to their home country to serve with our mission.

Two of our ABC/ABU graduates, Linda Owar and Rachel Ainebyona (both originally from Uganda), will be working at the college’s new radio station on the Kampala campus. This month in Uganda, engineers are erecting a 210 ft. tower that will broadcast the gospel of Christ to this capital city of 1.4 million residents.

It is a true joy to be part of a mission where great things are happening and God is at work in exciting ways. We are very grateful for your partnership through prayer and support. Your assistance is vital to the ministry of African Bible College—the tuition of every ABC student in Malawi and Uganda has to be subsidized by churches and Christian friends like you. By underwriting a scholarship for one student, you will be playing an important role in developing Christian leaders who will not only be qualified to sustain the existing work of missions in Africa, but will also be prepared to initiate ministries that are beyond the capability of foreign missionaries.

ABU STUDENTS

Since 1983 ABC/ABU has been graduating Christian leaders who are serving in vital roles for Christ across the continent. Three of our graduates—Bentry Mahango, Davidson Chifungo and his wife Phoebe—were some of the first Christian missionaries to enter the former communist country of Mozambique at the end of its civil war. Just two months ago, another of our Malawi graduates, Rex Chitekwe, was named Moderator of the Evangelical Church in Malawi. Steven Mupata, Class of 1996, is the National Director for Child Evangelism in Malawi, and Nixon Sinyiza, who graduated a year earlier, was the head of all Campus Crusade’s work in the country until he stepped down to run for a seat in Parliament. Your contribution to our scholarship program makes it possible for ABC/ABU to provide dedicated Christian leaders to these ministries and many others that are spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout this continent.

Three generations of Chinchens in Africa: Levi, Paul, Nell, and Jack

Thank you for your prayer and your support of the ministries of African Bible Colleges in Malawi and Uganda.

May God Bless,

Paul Chinchen, Th.D.
Director, ABC Ministries in Malawi
