The two books of Ezra and Nehemiah are studied as a unit because they go together like' being born again and the
strengthening of our lIew faith. The one should naturally follow the other.
In Ezra we will be involved with the exciting story of the return of the Jews from captivity in Babylon to their beloved city of Jerusalem and their struggle to build a temple for God. While investigating these important historical facts, we will at the same time see how those, who have been captives of sin, can return to God and be cleansed of sin so they become the temple of God so Christ lives in their heart.
Those of US who have become Christians, who have becqme the temple of God by inviting Jesus Christ to live in our hearts, know all too well that when this happens we become the enemy of the Devil and that he goes on the attack. In Ephesians 6:11, God's Word says, "Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the evil tricks of the Devil." That is exactly what the Book of Nehemiah is all about. When the Jews finished rebuilding the temple they failed to rebuild the walls aroune the city and the people sufferp~ cram the constant attacks ()f thE: enemy. Finally Nehemiah he~rd this bad news and he made it his
responsibility to build up the walls so as to keep the enemy out.
New Christians, like the Jews of old, often fail to build up their Spiritual walls and they suffer defeat from the attacks of the Devil. Our study of Ezra and Nehemiah will show us not only how the Jews built the temple and the walls of protection, but it will also make very clear how we can become the temple of God's Spirit and how we can build walls of protection that will give us victory against the attacks of the Devil.
